With social media sites growing year over year, it is very important that your business has a presence in that social media world. Some social media platforms are better for certain businesses than others. Other social media platforms may not seem like they make sense for your business, but it is very important to have as many outlets so you can be found online. I like to think of them as individual sales tactics that work for you for free and are working for you 24 hours a day. Plus, you don’t have to worry about the department of labor coming after you. LOL!

Like everything else, you need to be in the know and keep up with the times to make the most out of each outlet. Below I have listed some things to be aware of that may be important in 2018. This list is not in order by importance as they are all important to be aware of.


Video is getting more and more popular as a way to communicate and catch attention. I blame this since everyday is full of hustle and bustle. I feel like people want to read less and less to save time. If they just have to click on a video, it is quicker and easier.

It also allows you to show your personality and bring things to life! It is much more personable than a line of text and engages viewers.

Live Streaming

This goes along with video but it is live and in real time. Come on…we all like to watch live TV and hope there is a blooper or two! Plus with live streaming, you can interact with the viewers as you are streaming so there is a dialect there.

Augmented Reality

If you do not know what this is, it can be described as a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are “augmented” by computer-generated or extracted real-world sensory input such as sound, video, graphics, haptics or GPS data. – Wikipedia

Examples of this can be found by playing the massive (but old) phone game “Pokemon” or the Snapchat filters in the Snapchat app. It has been incredibly popular and I would expect the other social media platforms to adapt to a form of this as well. They have already added filters to many sites; this is only going to get more popular.

Keep up with Generation Z

More than likely, you are not part of Generation Z but studies have come out with this generation having the heaviest amount of buying power. Although they are young, social media platforms are going to follow their lead, as they are most profitable. If we pay a bit more attention to these young-ins (as my grandmother called them) instead of lecturing them, they may show us the way. Incase you don’t know what a Gen Z is, don’t feel bad, I had to look this up too. It is someone born between 1995 and 2012. Feel old yet? 🙂

Trends are ever-changing but there is a theme through all of these and that is, people want to be a part of what they purchase. They want to feel as close as possible to being a part of the product or service they are purchasing. If they get to see inside that world, they are more likely to join, buy or sign up.
