Professional Web Design vs. Amateur

Just the other day I was talking to a friend who was interested in starting a e-commerce website. He didn’t know much about the online part of things, so he came to me for advice. People had mentioned to him the ease of putting together an inexpensive and high-quality design utilizing Wix, Squarespace or Weebly and I agreed.

Although Wix and others are easy platforms for amateurs to navigate, there are many drawbacks. They are the following:

  • You are using a template – Most times these templates are used by hundreds of other people and aren’t custom designed to fit your businesses needs.
  • Some sites use Flash – Flash might not work all your potential customers computers or cell phones. It doesn’t work on iPhones and only works on a small percentage of Android devices.
  • Search Engine Optimization is poor – Flash websites are known for not being SEO-friendly. This makes it difficult for Google to find your website and crawl your data. In addition, to get SEO perks on user-friendly sites you might have to pay a bit more – bumping the cost of the website up even more.
  • Advertising all over – You might get the site for free, but often times you have advertising crawl across your screen, taking away attention from your company and what it has to offer.

These are just a few drawbacks to having user-friendly sites.
